Sodium EDTA is used as a chelating agent to help remove metal contamination especially iron from perfume, perfume compounds, aroma chemicals and essential oils. Long term storage in steel drums can lead to a metalic note developing and for some materials discolouration. The Sodium EDTA is added at 1% by weight to the material and being water soluble should precipitate. After 7 days the clear oil can be decanted off. Also often add to finished perfumes in hydro-alcohol solution at 0.1% to chelate iron that may have been come from stirring equipment and tanks during manufacture or may even be in traces in the essential oils used. Free iron (Fe) in a compound can act as an "Oxygen magnet" causing degradation and discolouration.
