Chanel No. 5 - Chanel

Perhaps the worlds best selling fragrance, despite being almost 70 years old. The creator Earnest Beaux used aliphatic aldehydes in dominant proportions for the first time in any fine fragrance. He discovered that blending aliphatic aldehydes with Ylang Ylang made them usable. Before this
perfumers attempts to use them were in the main unsuccessful. Even today when aldehydes are used in substantial percentages of a formulation it is hard to find them being used without Ylang Ylang.
Here follows an 'odourprint' and profile of the fragrance.
This can be used in The Perfumers Workboook, Graphic Odour Design Wizard
to demonstrate a typical formula for Chanel style fragrance.
PerfumersWorld does not publish formulations. This is systematic description of a fragarnce for the purpose of helping students to understand the structure.
